In this case the time taken by sound to travel from the source to the reflecting surface, and back to the source (in the form of an echo) is 3 seconds. So, the time taken by sound to travel from the source to the reflecting surface will be half of this time, which is 1.5 seconds. This means that sound takes 1.5 seconds to travel from the source to the reflecting surface.

Now,

Speed = Distance / Time

342 = Distance / 1.5 

Distance = 342 Ɨ 1.5 m

= 513 m
