- There are 12 major and 200 minor ports in India.
- Ports not only play a crucial role in facilitating international trade, they also act as fulcrums of economic activity and development in their surrounding areas.
- India has about 7517 km of main coastline spread over 13 states/union territories and studded with 12 major ports and 200 non-major ports (minor and intermediate).
- The major ports arc under the jurisdiction of the Central Government, while the minor and intermediate ports are managed and maintained by the respective .state governments
